{"id":960,"date":"2016-04-08T02:15:51","date_gmt":"2016-04-08T02:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?p=960"},"modified":"2016-05-16T03:50:14","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T03:50:14","slug":"a-day-off-from-work-a-beautiful-spring-day-april-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?p=960","title":{"rendered":"A Day off from Work, a Beautiful Spring Day April 7"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We had some unusual, almost summer-like weather this week, and it was too good to sit it out at my desk.\u00a0 An annual leave request complete and I was on my own for a day &#8211; or actually Bumble the dog and I were on our own.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_961\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Collins-Rd-across-valley-at-stream-crossing-e1460081394916.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-961\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-961\" class=\"wp-image-961\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Collins-Rd-across-valley-at-stream-crossing-e1460081394916-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Collins-Rd-across-valley-at-stream-crossing-e1460081394916-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Collins-Rd-across-valley-at-stream-crossing-e1460081394916-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-961\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The road and forest only 16 km from home across the valley, Bumble exploring up ahead.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>This being our first spring in the Lakeview area, we stayed local to explore since everything is new.\u00a0 My first target of the day was low-land <em>Ribes<\/em> growing on the edge of the valley.\u00a0 Based on my reading today, it seems in this area there are two <em>Ribes<\/em> in this habitat, <em>R. velutinum<\/em> and <em>R. cereum<\/em>, the former with spines, the latter without.\u00a0 Despite much searching, no aphids were found on either.\u00a0 It was a very dry year in 2015, possibly explaining the paucity of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=55\" target=\"_blank\">Aphis (Bursaphis)<\/a><\/em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=235\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Nasonovia (Kakimia)<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Along the way of this first leg of our exploring, I found one adult fundatrix of <a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=97\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pleotrichophorus<\/em><\/a> on <em>Artemisia arbuscula<\/em>.\u00a0 Somewhat surprisingly, I found a second-instar (-ish) fundatrix of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=316\" target=\"_blank\">Acyrthosiphon<\/a> purshiae<\/em> on its host, just breaking bud, <em>Purshia tridentata<\/em>.\u00a0 There were a few surprise plant finds too, including a patch of <em>Ribes aureum<\/em> along the streambank, and what seems to be a species of <em>Primula<\/em> growing in a seasonally wet draw.\u00a0 Along the stream grows a native <em>Rosa<\/em>, and on it I found a red <em>Macrosiphum<\/em> (?) fundatrix nymph.\u00a0 It is now in a jar on my desk, where I hope it matures to adult. On the one hand, it could be <em>M. rosae<\/em>, an unlikely event since this species usually does not overwinter as eggs in natural systems in western North America.\u00a0 On the other hand, it could be <em>M. valerianae<\/em>, potentially over-wintered on rose and soon migrating to the nearby <em>Zigadenus<\/em> (a.k.a. death camas).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_965\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0223.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-965\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-965\" class=\"size-large wp-image-965\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_0223-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Ribes cf. velutinum in the greater Lakeview valley. Unlike normal edible and nutritious camas, this is death camas and is aptly named.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our second stop of the day was Goose Lake State Park on the California border, about 20 km from home.\u00a0 We had never visited, and I wanted to see what was there in terms of ecology and botany. Like most state parks, it turns out to be a heavily managed landscape dominated by exotic invasive plants other than the trees and shrubs.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_970\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aphis-Bursaphis-ex-R-aureum-Goose-Lake-7-iv-2016-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-970\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-970\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-970\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aphis-Bursaphis-ex-R-aureum-Goose-Lake-7-iv-2016-2-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"Aphis (Bursaphis) cf. costalis on Ribes aureum, Goose Lake, Oregon.\" width=\"207\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aphis-Bursaphis-ex-R-aureum-Goose-Lake-7-iv-2016-2-207x300.jpg 207w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Aphis-Bursaphis-ex-R-aureum-Goose-Lake-7-iv-2016-2.jpg 565w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 207px) 100vw, 207px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Aphis (Bursaphis)<\/em> cf. <em>costalis<\/em> fundatrix on <em>Ribes aureum<\/em>, Goose Lake, Oregon.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Despite this, I found a cluster of <em>Aphis (Bursaphis)<\/em> fundatrices (probably the species &#8220;<em>costalis<\/em>,&#8221; which is poorly understood) on <em>Ribes aureum<\/em> growing among the cottonwoods.<\/p>\n<p>Abandoning the creepy managed space of Goose Lake state park, we ventured back to Lakeview and drove about 2 km up Bullard Canyon, which leaves downtown on Center Street.\u00a0 There I wanted to collect the early spring forms of a mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=818\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Macrosiphoniella<\/em><\/a> on an herbaceous <em>Artemisia<\/em> (success!), and hoped to find the fundatrices of a mysterious <a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=542\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Braggia<\/em><\/a> on <em>Eriogonum<\/em> along the roadside (success!).\u00a0 I had found both aphids in the area last fall, and want to study them in more detail.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_971\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Braggia-fundatrix-in-Bullard-Canyon-7-iv-2016-1.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-971\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-971\" class=\"wp-image-971 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Braggia-fundatrix-in-Bullard-Canyon-7-iv-2016-1-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"Braggia fundatrix in Bullard Canyon 7 iv 2016 1\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Braggia-fundatrix-in-Bullard-Canyon-7-iv-2016-1-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Braggia-fundatrix-in-Bullard-Canyon-7-iv-2016-1.jpg 631w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-971\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A <em>Braggia<\/em> fundatrix in Bullard Canyon. In the fall I collected this aphid and had a hard time identifying it to species. I am therefore highly motivated to collect more!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Happy with these finds, and some wading in the stream for the Bumble, we headed home for lunch.\u00a0 After which I took my mountain bike and rode to the radio antenna towers outside town.\u00a0 Lakeview sits at about 1,463 meters above sea level, and the radio towers above are about 1,950 meters.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a tough ride to the top, but worth it.\u00a0 As you can see in the photo, there is still a lot of snow on the north-facing slope.\u00a0 Under all that snow is one of my favorite plants, <em>Agastache urticifolia<\/em>, and if I am lucky, one of my favorite un-described <a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=21\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Macrosiphum<\/em> <\/a>species, only about 15 km by road from home (home is actually only about 2 km as the raven flies).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_972\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Radio-Tower-North-side-7-April-4.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-972\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-972\" class=\"size-large wp-image-972\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Radio-Tower-North-side-7-April-4-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"The radio antenna towers and snow int he hills above Lakeview.
