{"id":564,"date":"2015-10-25T15:59:09","date_gmt":"2015-10-25T15:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?p=564"},"modified":"2015-10-25T16:04:35","modified_gmt":"2015-10-25T16:04:35","slug":"a-year-of-few-outings-but-promising-new-places-ahead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?p=564","title":{"rendered":"A Year of Few Outings, but Promising New Places Ahead"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This year of 2015 we did not get out much, hence the few stories to blog about here.\u00a0 After my spring post about eastern Oregon, June and July were consumed by the emergency medical care for our old dog, who later died.\u00a0 Along the way, we set in motion a home relocation to Lakeview, Oregon!\u00a0 I posted a photo in the last blog entry from a reconnaissance trip to Lakeview and its nearby forests, and that trip sealed the deal.\u00a0 The area is fabulous, in part for the views, in part for the diverse and new plant and insect communities in southern Oregon and northern California.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_565\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0561.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-565\" class=\"size-large wp-image-565\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0561-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"The view of Lakeview, Oregon from the cell phone towers above town.\" width=\"474\" height=\"354\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0561-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0561-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 474px) 100vw, 474px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-565\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The view of Lakeview, Oregon from the cell phone towers above town.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With so much going on at home, plus a 3 weeks trip to Maine and New Hampshire thrown in, we had only a few camping trips since May.<\/p>\n<p>Our trip marking our parting with our Idaho home was a final spot on the top of the Owyhee Mountains in southern Idaho.\u00a0 It was Labor Day weekend in early September and we found this spot just below a ridge with a beautiful field of flowers still finishing their life cycle (called a nivation hollow).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_566\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0550.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-566\" class=\"size-large wp-image-566\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0550-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"Camp spot nestled into the mountain mahogany near War Eagle Mountain. We had 4 bars of 3G so Gina kept up on her emails&#8230;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Aphids were few except on the sage brushes, but as usual treasures are there to reward perseverance.\u00a0 One such find was the final stages of one of the species of <em>Aphis<\/em> that feeds on <em>Veratrum<\/em> (corn-husk lily).\u00a0 The biology of this aphid-plant interaction seems complicated, or at least has escaped my understanding for 25 years.\u00a0 There are clearly at least two species of <em>Aphis<\/em> on <em>Veratrum<\/em> out west here, but their life cycles are not obvious to me.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_567\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0552.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-567\" class=\"wp-image-567 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/IMG_0552-e1445788318866-765x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Black groups of aphids feeding on the nearly fully senesced stem of Veratrum.
