{"id":844,"date":"2016-01-10T17:37:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-10T17:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=844"},"modified":"2024-12-16T20:29:07","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T20:29:07","slug":"myzocallis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=844","title":{"rendered":"Myzocallis"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Myzocallis <\/em>Passerini<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an example of a tree-feeding group of aphids that is charismatic, easy to collect, and fairly well-studied.&nbsp; Much of the detailed work on this group we owe to F.W. Quednau, who I was not lucky enough to meet in person, but with whom I corresponded for several years.&nbsp; Most <em>Myzocallis<\/em> species feed on Fagaceae, especially <em>Quercus<\/em> (oaks).&nbsp; One species was described from <em>Asclepias<\/em> (milkweeds), but this host association is unexpected and apparently controversial.&nbsp; I have collected <em>Myzocallis<\/em> on <em>Asclepias<\/em> twice in eastern Canada, and my impression was definitely of a legitimate reproductive host, i.e. the aphids had not simply fallen from a&nbsp;<em>Quercus<\/em> to incidentally complete development on <em>Asclepias<\/em>.&nbsp; But, it could be that I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Myzocallis (Lineomyzocallis) walshii<\/em> (Monell)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an aphid among the few that were first in my collection back in the 1980s.&nbsp; Red oaks are commonly grown as ornamental shade trees in western Oregon, and on those trees almost invariably can be found <em>M. walshii<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Myzocallis-walshii-Prosser-x-2010.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-845\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"811\" height=\"873\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Myzocallis-walshii-Prosser-x-2010.jpg\" alt=\"Myzocallis walshii from Prosser, Washington.\" class=\"wp-image-845\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Myzocallis-walshii-Prosser-x-2010.jpg 811w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Myzocallis-walshii-Prosser-x-2010-279x300.jpg 279w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Myzocallis-walshii-Prosser-x-2010-768x827.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 811px) 100vw, 811px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Myzocallis walshii from Prosser, Washington.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Myzocallis Passerini This is an example of a tree-feeding group of aphids that is charismatic, easy to collect, and fairly well-studied.&nbsp; Much of the detailed work on this group we owe to F.W.
