{"id":488,"date":"2015-06-16T03:14:51","date_gmt":"2015-06-16T03:14:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=488"},"modified":"2024-12-16T20:42:37","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T20:42:37","slug":"myzodium","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=488","title":{"rendered":"Myzodium"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Myzodium<\/em> B\u00f6rner<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a very interesting genus that I have followed here and there the past 20+ years.\u00a0 I was among the first to discover the apparent synonymy of <em>M. knowltoni<\/em> and <em>M. mimulicola<\/em>, back in grad school.\u00a0 I still remember the collection that keyed me into the situation; remembered partly because the collecting trip was such a momentous thing for me &#8212; spending the gas money necessary to travel from Corvallis, Oregon to the ocean for collecting along the coast.\u00a0 In those days, gas money for the 60-mile drive each way was a major investment.\u00a0 And it was then that I found <em>M. mimulicola<\/em> on <em>Mimulus guttatus<\/em> on a cliff above the beach and realized the probable synonymy.\u00a0I also have a suspicion that <em>Myzodium<\/em> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/?page_id=208\">Glendenningia<\/a><\/em> are more closely related than it might seem, based on a field discovery back in the early 1990s (hint hint).\u00a0 No species of <em>Myzodium<\/em> have proven and published holocycly, but apparently I discovered the primary host of <em>M. mimulicola<\/em>: <em>Crataegus<\/em> (a native hawthorn).\u00a0 On my way between home and Pullman, Washington three times in May 2015, I collected on this tree near Winchester, Idaho.\u00a0 I found what appear to be fundatrices of <em>M. mimulicola<\/em> on one trip, and alate viviparae on another trip.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Myzodium-cf.-mimulicola-ex-Crataegus-nr-Winchester-ID-v-2015-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"899\" height=\"547\" src=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Myzodium-cf.-mimulicola-ex-Crataegus-nr-Winchester-ID-v-2015-1.jpg\" alt=\"Myzodium cf. mimulicola on Crataegus douglasii near Winchester, Idaho.\" class=\"wp-image-493\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Myzodium-cf.-mimulicola-ex-Crataegus-nr-Winchester-ID-v-2015-1.jpg 899w, https:\/\/aphidtrek.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Myzodium-cf.-mimulicola-ex-Crataegus-nr-Winchester-ID-v-2015-1-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 899px) 100vw, 899px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Myzodium cf. mimulicola on Crataegus near Winchester, Idaho.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Myzodium mimulicola <\/em>(Drews &amp; Sampson)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What a saga it has been playing with this species. I have run across it here and there starting in grad school. It appears to feed on mosses and semi-aquatic plants such as <em>Mimulus<\/em> and <em>Veronica<\/em>. As noted above, I may have recently discovered the primary host of this species as a native\u00a0<em>Crataegus<\/em>.
